Embroidery minimums and pricing: a 2026 wholesale buyer's guide

Embroidery is priced differently from print. Once you understand the three levers — stitch count, setup, and minimum — you can negotiate, value-engineer, and plan repeat runs without surprises.

The three pricing levers

1. Stitch count — embroiderers price per 1,000 stitches. A 4" left-chest logo is typically 7,000–10,000 stitches. A full-back logo runs 30,000+ stitches and costs 4–5x as much per piece.
2. Digitizing setup — one-time $40–$80 fee to convert artwork into a DST file the machine can read. Paid once, reused forever.
3. Minimum order — most embroiderers want 12+ pieces per design to amortize hoop setup. Below 12, expect a small-batch surcharge.

How thread color count affects price

Unlike screen printing, embroidery prices the same up to about 8–10 thread colors. Past that, the machine pauses more often and adds runtime. Most decoration shops cap at 12–15 colors per design.

The cheapest embroidery you can run

• Left-chest logo, ≤ 8,000 stitches: typically $5–$7 per piece at 24+
• Hat front, ≤ 7,000 stitches: typically $4–$6 per piece at 48+
• Sleeve hit, ≤ 4,000 stitches: typically $3–$5 per piece at 48+

Three ways to cut embroidery cost

1. Simplify the logo. Drop gradients, thin outlines, and small text — they balloon stitch count.
2. Combine orders. Same design across 3 brands? Run them all at once to skip rehooping.
3. Reuse setup. Once you pay the $50 digitizing fee, every future order saves it — talk to your decorator about archiving DST files.
